Regions

A region is a geographic location where your application's compute runs. Picked at application creation and fixed for the life of the application.

A region is a geographic location where your application's compute runs. You pick a region when you create an application, and the application stays in that region for its lifetime: every environment, deployment, and pod within it runs there.

Available regions today#

Primcloud is currently operating one region:

Region Location
us-east-1 🇺🇸 US East (NYC)

More regions are on the near-term roadmap; see below.

What a region determines#

The region you pick governs where every part of your application lives:

  • Where your pods run. Every long-running pod (web, workers), every task pod, and every build pod runs in the region.
  • Where your build artifacts are stored. The image produced by each build lives in the region's registry.
  • The CNAME target for custom domains. When you attach a custom domain, its CNAME points at <region>.primcloudns.com. See Domains for the full DNS setup.
  • The default *.primcloud.app subdomain endpoint. The subdomain for every environment resolves to the same regional endpoint your custom domains use.

Everything about the application, from where a request lands to where a task runs, happens inside the region.

Regions are chosen at creation#

The region field is required at the moment you create an application, and it's immutable after that. There's no dashboard action or API call to move a running application to a different region.

The reason is straightforward: moving compute across regions means moving IP addresses, DNS, TLS material, and any data-local state at the same time. Doing that cleanly is a whole product surface of its own, and rather than build a half-safe version we treat "move to another region" as "stand up a new application there."

To effectively "move," you create a new application in the target region, deploy the same repo to it, cut DNS over when you're ready, and delete the old application once traffic has fully shifted. Nothing about the code changes: the repo, the Procfile, the build, all the same.

Coming soon#

Additional regions are on the near-term roadmap. We'll add new regions here as they come online, and existing applications keep running exactly where they were created.
